The first of the absolutely fantastic Inspector Gamache mystery series. Visit the town of Three Pines and the people that live there -- people you will come to know and love. The plot is engaging, and the writing gently guides one into the story. There are now twelve books in the series. In some, Penny utilizes interesting historical facts and incidents, seamlessly woven into the plot. In all of the books, the characters -- and they are characters -- continue to develop, deepen and grow for the reader, with all of their strengths, weaknesses, triumphs and losses. Penny writes absolutely engrossing mysteries, but throughout the fabric of her stories is woven the thread of humanity, the struggle for justice, goodness and decency in the face of the world's cruel reality. Three Pines isn't on any map, and most guests stumble on the village by accident. But once found, one wants to stay, perhaps enjoying a glass of port in front of the fire at the Bistro; perhaps just sitting on a bench on the village green, watching the strange old woman walking, and talking to, her duck. But if you can't stay, trust me, you will want to return.
